Hooke’s law shows that the extension or compression of a spring will scale linearly with the force applied, dependent on the spring constant. It is an approximation that can be applied to linear-elastic bodies (below the elastic limit, which is the yield point above at which the material behaves plastically and permanent deformation occurs).
